Hockney explains that the inspiration for this series came from observing flowers in a vase on his table at home. He started with one painting and then continued with another, using the same ceramic vase as a reference. As he progressed, Hockney decided to experiment with a glass vase to capture the play of sunlight on the water and to explore the challenge of painting glass.
