In this artwork, Hockney employs his iPad to create a composition that contrasts vibrant yellow flowers against a subdued background. The digital medium allows for precise control over colour intensity and texture. The milk churn, rendered in cool blues and greys, provides a stark contrast to the bright yellow petals, creating a dynamic visual balance.

This piece is part of Hockney's broader series of iPad drawings, which he began producing in 2009 using the Brushes app. The series represents his adaptation to digital tools, allowing him to capture the transient beauty of nature with immediacy. The flowers are rendered with bold, confident strokes, while the background maintains a softer, more muted quality.

Hockney created this work during the COVID-19 pandemic at his home in Normandy, France. It reflects his continued productivity and adaptability in challenging circumstances. The artwork connects to the long tradition of still life painting while firmly placing itself in the 21st century through its digital execution.

Provenance

David Hockney's series of twenty flower iPad paintings gained recognition after being first reproduced by the German newspaper, Die Welt, and later exhibited at Musée Matisse in Nice. The series was created during the COVID-19 lockdown, a period when Hockney was isolated at home. Each artwork in the series showcases different flower species and tablecloth colors, but consistent elements allow viewers to appreciate Hockney's technique and dedication to his subject. Through a range of floral compositions, Hockney skillfully balances the artistic elements of line, color, and perspective, creating visually captivating and harmonious pieces. These artworks depict various arrangements of flowers placed against gingham tablecloths and burgundy walls.

Hockney explains that the inspiration for this series came from observing flowers in a vase on his table at home. He started with one painting and then continued with another, using the same ceramic vase as a reference. As he progressed, Hockney decided to experiment with a glass vase to capture the play of sunlight on the water and to explore the challenge of painting glass.
